Kilpisjärvi, Lapland 29.12 ->

Kilpisjärvi is small 160-habitant-village in the end of the arm of Finland in Northern Lapland (watch the map). It's also the place where join the borders of Finland, Sweden and Norway. We drove there almost 1200 km's from Tampere to experience the unreal tranquility and the dusk of "dayless days". There was exceptionally little snow as in all the Finland this far. Temperatures were very reasonables: between -7 and -20 C. There was "day" more or less from 11 to 15 but the sun was never visible.

[above] We were lucky to see bright aurora borealis i.e. Northern Lights.

[above] 10:40 am. The blue darkness will vanish soon...

[above]...and turn into reddish glow, 11:40 am

[above] Skiers on the frozen Kilpisjärvi lake. On the left hand side of the photo there is Sweden and on the right Norway. 13:45.

[above] A panorama to northwest from Salmivaara hill. In the middle of the photo there is the 2nd highest fell (or mountain) of Finland, Saana, 1029 m.
[below] Another panaroma from Slamivaara, to southeast. It's 13:40.

[all below] Hiking to the top of the Saana fell.
